Here’s a thought that may sound crazy at first. Give it a chance, if you will.
What if you had the power to dream up the future version of yourself, and then create it? Do you believe it’s possible? I do!
I don’t mean that you can dream this new and improved version of you today and wake up as that 2.0 model tomorrow morning. It’s not a transformation that happens quickly. We’re talking about the you of the future, maybe 10 or 20 years from now, so this means you’ve got time to chip away at it as you bring your vision to life.
Here’s how you can create an entirely new version of you.
You’ll want to spend some quiet reflective time contemplating and envisioning who you want to become. The more detail that you can bring into your vision the better. Craft this vision vividly in your mind, maybe even write it down in a journal and let it evolve as you put more and more thought into it. Add more details as you go. Greater detail will give you more to work with as you create the future you.
Next, fire up your imagination even further, and sit down when you have about 30-60 minutes alone, and write a letter from your future self to your current self. It might sound crazy, but don’t skip this step – it brings emotions into the deal, and those emotions will give it more meaning. In the letter from the future you, thank your current self for taking the time to decide who they want to be. If you want, dare to write about where you might have ended up had you never committed to creating the future you that you desired. Get deep into character as the future you and describe what life is now like – the habits that you’re grateful you developed, the freedoms you now get you enjoy because of the work your current self has put in, and the joys of being the you in the future, as a result of the vision you created in the past and the hard work that you put in over the years to make it a reality. Dream big!
Remember, everything that you see around you once began as a thought in someone’s mind. Nothing is really out of reach. If you can dream it, you believe it’s possible and that you’re worthy of that dream (which you are), and you commit to achieving it – nothing is impossible.
When I sat down to work on my own “Future Me” project, I made this list of the person that I aim to create: The future me has a deep sense of peace within. I live in alignment with what I desire in my life and the actions that I take. I say no to things and people that are not congruent with my values, and I look for opportunities and people that are in alignment. I read and learn and grow every day. I am generous with my time and money when it comes to people and causes that matter to me. I give myself and others grace. I write everyday. I exercise everyday. I am financially savvy and am very wealthy. I have freedom of time and money. I am successful and I love what I do, which is helping others find hope, health and happiness. I emit an energy of confidence and humility. I give and receive love freely. I believe in myself and I know that I am worthy of love and belonging exactly as I am. I help others and I ask for help when I need it. I create/seek spaces with a calm, peaceful and positive energy. I am mentally, physically, spiritually, emotionally and financially strong. I share my gifts with the world. This is my vision for the future me.
Once you’ve taken the time to form your detailed vision of the future you and have written the letter from that future 2.0 version of you to your current self, now it’s time to begin the work of bringing your vision into the physical realm! Here’s how.
First, you must commit to this goal. Without a strong commitment, you leave it up to chance. Believe this – your life is too valuable to leave to chance. To get seriously committed, it may mean speaking aloud your commitment regularly into the mirror each morning, and rereading that letter. Do this frequently as a reminder of why it’s important to you.
Next, you will begin to create small habit changes, so that your habits now start to slowly mirror those of the future version of you. It’s important to start small and gradually build on them. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and the future you will not spring to life that quickly either! Be patient and understand that it is a gradual process.
As I create the future version of myself that I envision, I am working on building the habits she will have. I get up earlier now than I used to so I can read and write. I schedule daily exercise, even if it’s just a quick workout or a walk. I have started to shift my money habits from spending to saving more, and I’ll increase this over time. I am taking a digital marketing course and have sought new opportunities in online businesses. I grow my businesses a little each week. I trust that with consistent actions, eventually they will get bigger and bigger. I look for ways to help others. And I will keep repeating these actions, and building on these habits. I will be persistent and resilient as I grow. And it’ll all keep adding up, until one day…I realize – I’m her.
We are all creators. You are powerful. You are made to create. You have gifts to share. What “Future You” will you create?
